Getting a new phone can feel overwhelming. There are so many settings, apps, and notifications. Here's a simple 5-step checklist to get you started safely — no technical knowledge required.
1. Set up a screen lock
This is the most important step. A screen lock keeps strangers out of your phone if you lose it or set it down somewhere.
How: Go to Settings → Security (or Face ID & Passcode on iPhone). Set up a PIN, fingerprint, or face unlock. A 6-digit PIN is fine.
2. Turn on automatic updates
Updates fix security holes that scammers can exploit. Turning on automatic updates means your phone stays protected without you having to think about it.
How: Go to Settings → Software Update → turn on "Auto download" or "Automatic updates."
3. Set up "Find My Phone"
If you ever lose your phone, this feature lets you find it on a map, make it ring, or erase it remotely so no one can access your information.
How: iPhone: Settings → Your Name → Find My. Android: Settings → Security → Find My Device. Make sure it's turned on.
4. Review app permissions
When you install apps, they ask for access to things like your camera, location, and contacts. Only say "yes" to things that make sense for what the app does.
How: If a flashlight app asks for access to your contacts — that's suspicious. Say no. You can always change permissions later in Settings → Apps.
5. Add your emergency contacts
Set up emergency contacts and medical information so first responders can reach your family even if your phone is locked.
How: iPhone: Health app → Medical ID. Android: Settings → Safety & Emergency → Emergency contacts.
