If you use the same password for your email, your bank, and your Amazon account, you're not alone — but you are at risk. When one company gets hacked (and they do, regularly), criminals try that same password on everything else. It's called "credential stuffing" and it works more often than you'd think.
A password manager solves this by remembering all your passwords for you. You only need to remember one master password.
What is a password manager?
Think of it like a locked safe for all your passwords. You open the safe with one master key (your master password), and inside it has a unique, strong password for every website and app you use.
It fills in your passwords automatically, so you don't have to type them or remember them.
Which one should I use?
Here are three good options, all with free versions:
- Apple Passwords (built into iPhones and Macs) — If you use Apple devices, this is the easiest. It's already on your phone.
- Google Password Manager (built into Chrome and Android) — If you use a Samsung or Google phone, this works automatically.
- Bitwarden (free, works on everything) — If you use a mix of devices, Bitwarden is free and works on phones, tablets, and computers.
How to get started
- Pick one of the options above
- Set a strong master password (a short sentence works well, like "My dog Biscuit loves the park")
- Next time you log into a website, let the password manager save it
- Over time, it will collect all your passwords
- Gradually change old passwords to new, unique ones the manager generates for you
Common concerns
"What if the password manager gets hacked?"
Good password managers encrypt everything so strongly that even they can't read your passwords. It's far safer than writing passwords on paper or reusing the same one everywhere.
"What if I forget my master password?"
Write your master password on a piece of paper and keep it somewhere safe at home — a drawer, a file folder. Not on a sticky note on your monitor.
"This sounds complicated."
It's simpler than it sounds. And we can help you set it up. We do this every week for clients.
